We love you drop your guns

Yesterday Mel and I saw a movie at the Kimball Theatre, Williamsburg's version of an art-house. We didn't know a lot about the film, going in; I had read about it somewhere online and thought Mel would like it.
I am so glad we went. We emerged an hour and half later, awed, inspired, and reaching for words that could describe the experience without cliches.
Pray the Devil Back to Hell is an amazing documentary about Christian and Muslim women in Liberia, who came together in order to stop a horrific civil war. I don't want to say too much about what they did, so as not to ruin the story, but suffice it to say that these are some incredibly brave ladies.
If it's playing anywhere near you, go see it right now. If it's not, put it on your Netflix queue, or ask your library to buy a copy of the DVD.
Catch the trailer on Youtube here, or visit the official site here. (I should note: The film is not rated, but contains some brief disturbing images of war victims, and at least two retold stories of atrocities. However, I don't see how they could have told this story without including at least some of the brutality the women were trying to stop.)

Home again, home again

Back from an amazing trip to Guatemala. Mel has put up several blog posts with lots of captioned pictures, which you can read in order:
1. Guatemala!
2. Guatemala - Day Two
3. Guatemala Part Three (How Paint Fumes Lead to Partying)
4. Guatemala Part Four: Mayan Villages and Chicken Buses
5. Guatemala Part Five: COFFEE
6. Guatemala Part Six: The Other Side (or, Christmas Eve at the Malnutrition Center)
7. Guatemala, the Final Installment (at Christmas, people from some cultures sing "silent night" and go to bed early; people from some other cultures blow things up at midnight. Confusion ensues.)
